Copy Your Clothes Materials List

Class 1: Bring several items of clothing to choose from. We want to match up your sewing experience level with the complexity of the garment patterning. Once we settle on a garment, we’ll begin tracing the seams for your each piece of your pattern, truing up our lines, and adding seam allowances. We’ll talk about ideal fabric choices for your new garment, and figure out yardage needed. You do not need your fabric or sewing machine for this first class.

Class 2: Bring your pre-washed (if necessary) fabric and notions. We’ll finish up any pattern drafting, pin your pattern pieces to the fabric, and cut/mark. We’ll begin stitching and get as far as we can.

Class 3: Keep on stitchin’! We’ll do it in stages to do intermittent fittings and tweak your pattern accordingly. Depending on your pacing, you may have some homework so you’ll be able to finish up in Class 4.

Class 4: Finish up stitching, and make any final changes to your perfected pattern!

MATERIALS

 • Tools: I have plenty of these to share, but you will eventually want to purchase your own.

 • 2” x 18” clear ruler

 • Paper scissors (not your good fabric shears)

 • French curve if you have one.

 • Hip curve ruler or Vary-form ruler if you have one.

 • 5/8” Seam Allowance curve ruler

 • Pattern notcher if you have one.**

• Pattern Tracing Wheel—the spiky kind: **

**Here’s a good deal on a set including notcher, tracing wheel, and awl: https://www.amazon.com/Pattern-Notcher-Tracing-Supplies-construction/dp/B0115MK80S/ref=sr_1_48?keywords=pattern+drafting+tools&qid=1567816589&s=gateway&sr=8-48

I’ll provide all the other pattern-making materials—paper, pencils, and use of my tools if you don’t have them or don’t wish to buy a set just yet. It can be expensive to get all these tools at once!

Fabric: Once we have determined what garment you’ll be copying, we can estimate needed yardage and discuss fabric choices to compliment/match the original style.

Notions: thread, interfacing, and any other notions like elastic, buttons, etc. that your copied garment requires. We can talk about your specific materials and notions in class 1 for you to bring to class 2.

Machine & Accessories:

Your sewing machine, or rent one of mine. Be sure to bring the right size needle for your project, and ballpoint if you’re working with a knit. You’ll need an empty bobbin or one filled with your project thread choice. And don’t forget that power cord and foot pedal :)

If you have a serger, and it is in good working order, and you can use it confidently, you can bring that too! This is NOT the class to learn to use your serger for the first time.

Just let me know if you have any questions. See you soon!

Cheers,

Leslie
